Good painting is ninety per cent preparation. We fill, sand, caulk and prime so walls and woodwork take the paint evenly and the finish lasts years, not months. The bay-fronted thirties semis through Wood Green and Mesty Croft have a particular weak point: the timber in the bay itself. It is the most exposed joinery on the house, it is usually the first thing to go, and it is routinely painted over while it is still wet. We check it, cut out and fill what has gone, prime bare timber properly and only then finish it, which is why our exterior work is still sound when the quick job down the road has flaked. Fascias, soffits and rendered elevations get the same treatment on the same visit.
